Introducing New Romance Author Laurie Wood

New Author

It is with great joy that we introduce our newest author, Laurie Wood.

  1. Tell us a bit about yourself. Include a couple of facts that not a lot of people know about you.

I’m Canadian and live in central Canada right in the geographical centre of North America which I found interesting when we moved out here. I was a police officer back in the 1980’s when women in Canada were just pioneering being police officers and I loved it as a career. But we were blessed with two children with special needs who needed me at home. And my husband’s military career has taken us all over Canada. My being able to stay home and write has also been a blessing.

  1. Tell us a bit about the book that will be published by Anaiah Press.

It’s a romantic suspense that takes place in the real town of Churchill Manitoba which is on the shores of Hudson Bay in northern Canada. The town itself is only 900 hundred people. It’s known as the “Polar Bear Capital of the World”. I’ve dreamed of writing romantic suspense/thrillers set in Canada for a long time. This is a “reunion” romance between two people who broke up over a huge secret and are now older and wiser but with bigger life responsibilities in the way of them getting back together. And when the killer gets wind of what the heroine has in her possession that he needs back the chase is on.

  1. When and why did you start writing?

I wrote back in the 1990’s when my children were small. Naptimes and after bed were the times, I scraped writing time together. I always wanted to be a writer but needed a day job like everyone else. And I joined Romance Writers of America and came close to selling once but then my husband joined the military and we moved around *a lot* and the dream took a back seat as he was gone a lot too. I started writing again two years ago and this time I didn’t let go of the dream.

  1. Is this your first book? How many have you written? How many have you published?

This is the fourth book I’ve written and it will be my first published book. I completely lost one book during one of our moves – hard copies, USB, the works. But they were all great learning tools and the key is to finish what you start.

  1. Tell us a bit about your journey to publication.

I’ve finaled twice in the Daphne du Maurier contest, and also in the TARA, the Jasmine, and the Genesis contests. These got me requests for partials of the books I mentioned above, and I had wonderful editorial feedback and came close to selling once. But it was doing #FaithPitch on Twitter that led me to the offer of a contract with Anaiah Press. And I couldn’t be happier!

  1. What are some of your favorite books / authors?

I love the old classics by Mary Stewart like “Madam Will You Talk?” and anything by Daphne du Maurier. The entire Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon, romantic suspense by Laura Griffin, Dani Pettrey, Melinda Leigh, Loreth Anne White. I read across CBA/ABA lines. And I enjoy historical fiction as well–WW2 and back to medieval times.

  1. What are some of your favorite movies / TV shows?

Timeless! Lethal Weapon, SEAL Team, Deception, Blacklist, Blindspot, Criminal Minds, Caught, Chance, Designated Survivor, Knightfall, Vikings, Outlander, and for movies: Last of the Mohicans, Gladiator, Braveheart–all the big historical ones.

  1. Where do you find inspiration for your books?

I keep newspaper clippings both in print and online. I have secret  Pinterest boards where I “pin” articles that intrigue me for “what if”  scenarios. For NORTHERN DECEPTION it was all about the polar bears and their habitat shrinking from climate change. And what else could do to make it worse?

And sometimes a book will inspire me. The first book I wrote was inspired by a non-fiction account of the Third Crusade.

  1. Describe your perfect day of relaxation.

A hot stone massage at our local Thermea Nordic Spa and Hot Pools–a  bit expensive! Or, a day spent spinning with my spinning group and  enjoying making yarn out of wool or silk fibre. Much less expensive!
