We are thrilled to introduce to you, Holly Cohen, who just signed her Adventures novel, The Christmas Angel in Apt. 3C, with Anaiah Press!
Tell us a bit about yourself. Include a couple of facts that not a lot of people know about you.
I am a grateful follower of Jesus, married to my best friend, who still makes me laugh like no one else can. I’m also blessed to have two wonderful sons. Originally from New Jersey, I now call Southern California home. Technical writing is my day job, but writing for children is my passion. I love spending time with my family, hanging out with friends, bodyboarding, hiking, writing, reading, and creating. I play the ukulele, and my secret talent is extracting stuffed animals from claw machines!
Tell us a bit about the book that will be published by Anaiah Press.
It is a middle grade novel titled The Christmas Angel in Apt. 3C. The following excerpts from my query describe it best:
“Papa has been shut down for as long as Angel can remember. It’s not like she’s asking for that much – just a little Christmas joy and a smile once in a while. Angel feels like she’s jousting at windmills, though, until an ethereal voice singing words of comfort drifts through her window one night starting her on a journey of sorrow, friendship, faith, hope, and love.”
“Fierce and fearless, Angel hatches a plan with the nativity at its core to bring Christmas to apartment 3C, where she lives with Papa and a pesky cat named Mr. Mustachio. Meanwhile, her arch nemesis, Brian, is tormenting her, and calamities are springing up like weeds. Angel is no quitter, though, and new friendships and deepening faith spur her on in the face of mounting uncertainties.”
When and why did you start writing?
I started writing poetry when I was a child and went on from there. I love to create things (art, crafts, etc.), and writing falls right in line with that. It is another way I can express myself creatively.
Is this your first book? How many have you written? How many have you published?
I have written three books, but this is my first middle grade novel, and my first book to be published.
Tell us a bit about your journey to publication.
First, I started writing stories, poems, and other material for children and submitting my work to children’s magazines. Soon, back page puzzles and other items that I wrote appeared in AppleSeeds magazine. Next, a Christian curriculum publisher offered me assignments to write quarterly Sunday school curriculum geared toward 6-8 year olds. Eventually, I wrote a poetry collection about Exodus and a picture book titled Maui to the Rescue (both currently unpublished). Finally, I decided to try my hand at writing a middle grade novel. I took a chance and pitched my novel via #FaithPitch. Happily, Kara Leigh Miller hearted one of my pitches for the novel, and this is the book that Anaiah Press will be publishing!
