When words fail me, I can almost always find a song or meme to convey what I can’t.
My nine year old son has been battling fear for the past year or so. He’ll probably find this post when he’s a teen and be like “Really, mom?”
I tried explaining that he doesn’t have anything to fear. That myself and his dad as well as his other family members and most importantly God will protect him. We’ve prayed with him at bed time. We’ve told him to pray when he feels scared. We’ve shared scriptures about fear. But he’s still scared.
I’ve prayed with him, over him and for him. I didn’t know how to help him anymore than we were already doing. One day I heard a song, I can’t remember if it was on the radio or on YouTube but I immediately thought he needed to hear it. The song was Mosaic MSC’s Tremble. You see, one of the fears my son has been dealing with is fear of the dark. The chorus of the song goes like this:
Jesus, Jesus, You make the darkness tremble
Jesus, Jesus, You silence fear
Jesus, Jesus, You make the darkness tremble
Jesus, Jesus
These lyrics were able to lead me into a discussion about how even the darkness is afraid of Jesus.
While he still battles fear he has a better grip on it. He sings this chorus when he’s having moments of fear. I’ve let him listen to other songs about fear like Fear is a Liar by Zach Williams and Reckless Love by Cory Asbury.
This is not the first time and it probably won’t be the last time that I’ve turned to a song to help me through a situation. It may not always be a song I use to teach my children something. It may be a song I use to cope with a situation, Worn by Tenth Avenue North comes to mind. Or a song I use to motivate myself. Whatever it is, music will be there to help along the way.
